Creating A Winning Advertisement

There is no doubt that advertising can be expensive. For this reason alone, it is important to develop an advertisement that is effective without breaking the bank. There are ways to do this, but it takes solid research, hard work and creative thought. The very first thing you should do as an advertiser for your business is decide on an upper limit cost and stick to it. If you go over your advertising budget, this can take away from other needs you have and do more harm than good for your business. This is where research can come in handy, you need to know the cost of different types of advertising before you can set a budget.

You can certainly do this research on your own, by contacting different placement services and asking them for their prices. For example, you might contact the newspaper, Yellow Pages, local television station and radio station for their advertising rates. If you are looking to go larger with magazine print ads and television commercials, you should hire an ad agency to handle the major points of your campaign for you. Ad agencies develop the ad and launch the campaign based on your requirements, and can often work within your budget.

These agencies know the secrets of successful advertisements. One is targeting your demographic. For example, you're not going to want advertisements for baby diapers or lipstick on a network which caters primarily to men. And on the flip side, you wouldn't want to advertise power tools or hunting gear during commercial breaks during a soap opera or talk show. Ad agencies take all of this into consideration when deciding on placement. They also know the importance of using the right words, images and even color. Color is a very powerful subconscious tool that can have a subtle yet effective influence when used properly.

If you are a small business who doesn't have the money or the need to hire an advertising agency, do plenty of research on things like effective copywriting, imagery and the use of color. Even if you are placing a small advertisement in the newspaper or Yellow Pages, the right words and the right font and text size can make a big difference in customer response. There are all kinds of books available on advertising and copywriting that can help you create a campaign on your own, or at the least give you an idea of what you want before approaching an advertising agency.
